Shared
Interest and Traidcraft played hosts
to the largest ever international
conference on fair trade from 23 to
28 June 2003. This was the seventh biennial conference of IFAT, the International Fair Trade
Association,
being held in the UK for the first
time. There were 280 delegates
from 47 countries.
On
the opening and closing days, delegates were joined by several hundred members
and supporters of Shared Interest, Traidcraft and the British Association
of.Fair Trade Shops. The conference
attracted 24 sponsors including local businesses.
The
overall theme was 'Speaking out for Fair Trade' and many discussions and
workshops focused on market development, monitoring and promotion.
IFAT adopted a new strategic plan and agreed a paper to be presented to
the World Trade Organisation meeting in September.
