PREDA Fair Trade Assisted Project 10 women gathered at the house of Antonia Rago for the orientation on PREDA and fair trade. Antonia Rago has a history of successful entrepreneurship. Although a pharmacist by training, she and her husband Jose founded Prisa Industries in Gamu, Isabella in 1993 for the manufacture and sale of loofah products. At a PHILEXPORT National, Department of Training and Industry product design seminar, they were introduced to the idea of decorative Christmas balls. In 1997 they successfully introduced them into their product line. The demand was great enough that additional workers were needed.
the Christmas ball ornaments in Daraga. Antonia Rago individually designs each ball. She currently draws the design outline on each ball before it is given to the other women who cut and paste the fabric on to it. With increased orders, production has been expanded to include approximately twenty women whose families are considered squatters along the Manila-Legaspi rail line. Although the original five women make the balls as a hobby, for the women along the railroad tracks, this is a serious opportunity for them to improve the circumstances of their family. Antonia supplies all the materials to the producers.
If
a market can be found for these items, this is an ideal opportunity for PREDA
to help build an association of workers that would have mutual benefit for
all. THEIR PRODUCTS: Christmas
Ornaments 2004
